Summer Safety
Posted on 7/23/2020
Whether playing or working outside, here are some simple tips to keep you safe this summer.
SUN PROTECTION
- Be sure to wear sunscreen that provides both UVA and UVB protection and reapply frequently, especially after swimming.
- Sunglasses and a wide brim hat should be part of your summer wardrobe as well.
- Utilize an umbrella as a way to stay in the shade, especially during midday hours.
- Most importantly, stay hydrated by drinking lots of water while out in the sun.
- You should also know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke and know what to do to treat each.
SWIMMING SAFETY
- Maintain constant supervision, especially for children.
- Always swim with a buddy – never swim alone.
- When in a public pool, lake, or ocean, only swim in designated areas that are supervised by lifeguards.
- Have an emergency swimming kit that consists of a charged cell phone, a first aid kit, a pair of scissors, and a floatation device.
- Keep away from swimming near jetties and piers and learn to swim parallel to the shore in the case of a rip tide.
- If you are not a strong swimmer, wear a life jacket.
- Make sure your home pool has the appropriate safe guards installed, like a fence and locked pool gates.
BOATING SAFETY
- Always wear a life jacket while boating, it can make all the difference.
- Appoint a designated driver. Drinking and boating is just as dangerous as drinking and driving.
- Check the weather as it can change at a moment’s notice. Don’t be caught off guard.
- Keep a fire extinguisher on board that can put out fires that are gas based.
GRILLING SAFETY
- Be sure to grill outdoors and keep the grill 10 feet from the side of the house.
- Always keep children and pets at a safe distance when using a grill.
- Never leave a lit grill unattended.
- Keep perishable foods cold until it is time to cook to help reduce the risk of bacteria.
- When using a charcoal grill don’t add lighter fluid to coals that are already hot.
- Make sure you keep a fire extinguisher close by.
ROAD SAFETY
- Motorcycles, bicycles, and other summer vehicles can be difficult to see, so be aware of your surroundings.
- If you have a few drinks at a picnic or beach party, find someone to drive you home.
- Beware of road construction during the day and at night! Drive at least 20 mph below the speed limit through these areas.
After staying home and indoors the past several months due to COVID-19, it is time to have some fun in the sun and enjoy some fresh air. Enjoy the Summer safely!
